  Fees

The UW Professional Master's in Computational Linguistics is an affordable option for students looking for advanced education in this field. Instructional fees for the 2011-2012 academic year total $727 per credit. All students pay the same rate no matter their residency status. Instructional fees are payable on a quarter-by-quarter basis.

In addition, each quarter there is a nonrefundable $39 registration fee ($42 effective for all summer quarter 2012 registrations), a technology fee of $11 to $41, and additional required fees that support student activities and programs ranging from $45 to $159. The technology fee and other required fees are based on the number of credits taken. The cost of textbooks is extra. Fees are subject to change.

Beginning autumn 2011, U-PASS Powered By ORCA will be a universal program for all students who pay Other Required Fees, including students in online degree programs. The U-PASS fee will be automatically charged by UW Student Fiscal Services. Important instructions regarding the U-PASS, its activation and use, and payment deadlines are on the Commuter Services website.

Important Note: The quarterly U-PASS fee will separately appear in your student “Tuition Account Balance” section of MyUW. You will not receive a mailed or e-mailed bill for the U-PASS fee. Payment is due to UW Student Fiscal Services by the third Friday of each quarter.

Financial Aid

There is a small number of program-specific scholarships available, amounting to approximately one-third of the cost of course fees for the program. These scholarships are allocated on the basis of academic merit (academic record, evidence of personal initiative and research potential) and financial need. The former is evaluated on the basis of the application materials submitted to program, and the latter on the basis of the FAFSA. These scholarships are open to both U.S. and international students. Only students who apply by the March 1 deadline will be considered.

To apply:

  1. Indicate your interest in a scholarship in your statement of purpose.
  2. Complete the FAFSA by the program application deadline.

Note to international students: If you have a social security number, you can fill out the FAFSA. It will indicate that you are not eligible for federal financial aid, but that does not matter for these purposes. If you do not have a social security number, please contact our program coordinator to ask for a manual financial aid form.

Further information on financial aid is available at the UW Office of Student Financial Aid website and the UW Libraries Grants and Funding Information Service. In addition to federal financial aid, students in the Computational Linguistics program may be eligible for a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. For more information, visit the NSF web site under "social sciences." The Linguist List also maintains a list of funding sources.

Students in all fee-based programs, including this degree, are ineligible for the tuition exemption program, institutional tuition waivers or the Undergraduate/Graduate University Grant programs, including the Husky Promise program. For more information, click here.
